Boiler Passport

 From September 2009 technicians in Ireland will find a boiler passport supplied with every new oil boiler. The Boiler Passport has been prepared in consultation with OFTEC and is designed to provide a means by which consumers will receive a properly installed and commissioned appliance that meets current Building Regulations.

The passport will be supplied with the following manufacturers products; Firebird, Grant, Turkington and Warmflow. The passport has been developed in direct response to the recognition that incorrect installation and failure to commission is frequently the cause of a failure of the boiler - rather than an actual fault of the product. Any future warranty will be conditional upon the correct installation of the boilers along with the completion of a Boiler Passport and the commissioning certificate being returned to the relevant manufacturer.

The passport is fixed to the appliance and must remain with the appliance to provide the consumer with evidence of proper commissioning and a detailed service record. Use of non-competent persons may invalidate the warranty.

Completion of Passport

Instructions for completion are clearly printed on the inside cover of the Passport – the details should be completed legibly and in block capitals.  The commissioning certificate is in triplicate and you should only complete the top copy as carbon copies will be produced automatically. When completed tear out the top page only, fold and post off to the manufacturer using the envelope provided with the Passport or Fax the commissioning certificate to the manufacturer using one of the numbers below or if applicable, link to the manufacturers website for online notification.

The 2nd copy may be retained by the Technician and the last copy must remain in the Passport for future reference.

All sections of the certificate must be completed in full and any missing information could invalidate the warranty - if you have queries about the passport or the boiler itself, contact the relevant manufacturer;

Golden rules for the installing technician;

  • The installer is responsible for completing this passport and returning the paperwork to the manufacturer.
  • The appliance must be correctly commissioned in accordance with the appliance manufacturer’s instructions and registered with the manufacturer.
  • The Central Heating System must be cleansed with a proprietary cleanser and treated with a proprietary corrosion inhibitor, the concentration of which must be checked at each annual service.
  • The incoming cold water mains supply to a combi boiler must be fitted with a suitable and effective hard water treatment.
  • A fuel filter with a filter rating of 70 microns or better must be fitted to the fuel supply to the appliance, in accordance with the burner manufacturer’s recommendations.

Remember, the future warranty of the appliance is conditional upon correct installation, completion of the passport document and returning the commissioning certificate to the appliance manufacturer – if you don’t do this the warranty could be invalid.
